This is represented when Sal starts to ignore Miranda, which confuses Miranda because they were such great friends. Marcus and Miranda talk about time travel and how it is possible when connecting over a book they’ve both read. The Laughing man because and Marcus is the same person. The time period in the book is based around Marcus’ younger self but the Laughing Man is the one who travels back to his childhood to save Sal.

Time and time travel is reoccuring throughout the book. One of the themes in the novel is time travel. Help students to identify the Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution and then connects to create the story’s theme. Further, Miranda experiences a personal transformation when she decides to become a nicer person and befriends Alice Evans and calls a truce with Julia. Miranda also has her first revelation in this portion of the novel (a climax in and of itself) when she finally figures out that the Laughing Man was the person sending the notes.

The Laughing Man saves Sal.The climax of the novel comes when Sal is saved by the Laughing Man, who becomes a figure of supreme sacrifice. Then beside the image, have students write the meaning that is being suggested from the content in the novel. Later in the novel, we are shown how the pieces connect through the event of Marcus going back in time to sacrifice himself and save Miranda's friend Sal. Both of the books are sci-fi and are about time travel. An example would be how Miranda’s mother is being timed when answering questions for the TV Show or Julia’s watch that she broke, or even the watch that Sal received at Christmas. Throughout the book there is mention of different representations of time that is there to help the reader focus on and to understand how time is an important part of the storyline. The reader can draw conclusions about what may be happening within the novel. In When You Reach Me, the author uses the book A Wrinkle in Time to as a clue to the mysterious letters that Miranda was receiving. The novel creates a connection with time and time travel when Marcus and Miranda talk about the book and become friends.
